LP Fellow Ann Snyder Speaks at Conference in Denmark, Free Speech in Europe and America: Can We Learn Anything From the Americans?
Snaphanen https://www.legal-project.org/1894/lp-fellow-ann-snyder-speaks-at-conference-in The event was moderated by Lars Hedegaard, historian, journalist, and founder of The Free Press Society. It was organized by The Free Press Society and held on November 5, 2011 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Speakers at the event were: Douglas Murray (Associate Director, The Henry Jackson Society), whose characteristically witty presentation explored, among other issues, the politically-driven and uneven application of laws punishing speech in Europe; Morten Messerschmidt (Member of the European Parliament), who offered a thoughtful comparison of approaches to free speech protection in Europe and the United States; and Ann Snyder (Fellow at the Legal Project), who offered an American perspective and presented an overview of the First Amendment and free speech in the United States. She explored specifically the state of the law as it pertains to "incitement" and offensive expressive acts to illustrate the United States' especially speech-protective approach and to contrast it to the approach taken in Europe under so-called "hate-speech" provisions. Snyder urged the adoption of stronger protections for free speech in Europe and cautioned that any perceived dangers from opening the doors to free expression were overshadowed by the obvious threat to free society posed by allowing governments to encroach upon an essential human right like freedom of speech. Geert Wilders Lauds Legal Project "Last June, I was acquitted of all charges by an Amsterdam court. The Middle East Forum's Legal Project ... was always there to help, advise and assist ... The importance of the MEF's Legal Project in reclaiming free expression and political discourse ... cannot be overestimated." — Geert Wilders, September 29, 2011 Latest Blog Posts
