Canadian Jewish Congress comments on Ahenakew verdict
Canadian Jewish Congress https://www.legal-project.org/186/canadian-jewish-congress-comments-on-ahenakew Excerpt: Toronto---Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) notes today's verdict that found David Ahenakew not guilty of the willful promotion of hatred. "While the court has determined that Mr. Ahenakew's statements were revolting, disgusting and untrue, he did not demonstrate the required intent to meet the rightfully high threshold required for a guilty verdict in hate crimes cases under s. 319 of the Criminal Code, and we respect the court's decision," said CJC Co-President Sylvain Abitbol. "While Mr. Ahenakew has not been convicted, there is no doubt that his words and actions were antisemitic and we hope Mr. Ahenakew has come to understand the pain he has caused. We urge Mr. Ahenakew to make amends so he can be remembered for healing rather than for hurting," said Abitbol.
